EUROPEAN DATA PROTECTION DAY
On January 28, 2018, the European Day of Data Protection celebrates 37 years since the signing of Convention 108 on the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data in Strasbourg in 1981 - the first legal instrument adopted in the field of data protection.
This Convention opens the way for regulation at European level of personal data processing rules and we are now in a new stage in the field of data protection as a result of the adoption of the legislative package proposed by the European Commission.
Thus, on April 27, 2016, the European Parliament and the Council adopted the Regulation on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data and repealing Directive 95/46/EC and the Directive on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by competent authorities for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties, and on the free movement of such data.
The application of the Regulation on May 25, 2018 will have the effect of streamlining the principles of personal data protection in all Member States of the European Union and will replace the existing national legal regime.
In order to celebrate the European Data Protection Day, the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing will organize the Conference on “Applying the General Data Protection Regulation” at the Parliament Palace on January 26, 2018, starting at 11.00.
Information materials dedicated to the European Data Protection Day are available at www.dataprotection.ro/general information/public information/informal documentation.
Media access will be based on already existing accreditations at Parliament Palace level.
